Mitchell-Linden Community Library
Flushing, NY

IDG designed the Mitchell-Linden library to engage people of all ages and backgrounds. To foster community and safety, the new Mitchell Linden library has very few interior walls or doors. The design uses the angled geometry of the building to sculpt out smaller spaces within a cohesive whole.

Each small space is given over to a different age group – children, teens, adults and the elderly. The staff is concentrated in the center of the library behind a sparkling, angular bamboo service desk with clear visibility to all areas.

IDG placed lounge furniture, bright colors and lights up against the building’s glass to increase the street presence of the institution, and to invite engagement with the neighborhood. IDG used a rich palette of materials – overlapping wood tones, warm grays, glowing glass, and pops of vibrant color to make an appealing environment for everyone.

Client: Queens Library
